Port Vale Supporters’ Club has given a cautious welcome to today’s confirmation that Paul Wildes and his business partner Norman Smurthwaite are the new preferred bidders for the club.
Supporters’ Club representatives had a private meeting with Mr Wildes and the administrators before this afternoon’s press conference at which Mr Wildes outlined his vision for the club.
During the half hour meeting, Mr Wildes outlined his background in business, explained why the opportunity to buy Port Vale had appealed to him and stressed his commitment to having an ongoing dialogue with the Supporters’ Club and the fanbase as a whole.
The new preferred bidder would be paying £1.25m in cash, not installments, for Port Vale
He was attracted to Port Vale because it presents a great business opportunity, is a club with ‘massive potential’ and ‘no financial baggage’ allows him to mix his passion for competitive sport with the challenge of improving the business
His key priority was to make Port Vale sustainable in the long-term
His business does ‘not have to make a profit from Port Vale in the short-term’ and has no cash-flow issues – like those which have dogged previous boards and bidders
He had wanted to buy the club outright before today’s press conference but is waiting on Football League approval
He had ‘never previously committed to a deal and then not completed it’
He was aware of the fact that the fans had ‘been through the mill’ and asked to be judged on what he does in the coming weeks, months and years
He is keen to meet with Supporters’ Club representatives again and hold a fans’ forum event… once the takeover is complete
He regards Port Vale as a ‘sleeping giant’ and says the club clearly has the potential to be in the Championship
Mr Wildes’ bid was the last to come to the table and, according to the administrators, he had ‘done everything asked of him and very quickly’. This included paying a £100,000, non-refundable deposit yesterday to give himself a period of exclusivity to complete the deal.
Mr Wildes gave a personal undertaking to help the Supporters’ Club make the unveiling of the Roy Sproson statue on November 17 a day to remember for all Port Vale supporters
Mr Wildes is a Sheffield Wednesday fan and is already having good banter with Blades fan Micky Adams
Well his partners name sounds like something out of a 70’s sitcom hahaha, and after the sham of the last investor going belly up ill make judgment after the deals been done.
